 石 狗 公 分 布 於 北 海 道 南 部 以 南 的 日 本 各 地 及 菲 律 賓 等 地 。 依 據 其 棲 息 海 洋 的 深 度 ， 其 身 體 顏 色 會 隨 著 變 化 ， 沿 岸 的 石 狗 公 多 半 棲 息 於 沿 岸 的 礁 岩 中 ， 成 魚 會 在 夏 天 游 至 淺 海 ， 冬 天 則 會 移 居 至 深 海 處 。

 石 狗 公 嘴 巴 、 頭 均 很 大 ， 背 面 的 刺 強 硬 ， 身 長 約 為 3 0 公 分 ， 通 常 雌 魚 的 體 型 較 小 。 由 於 外 形 似 石 斑 ， 所 以 又 有 「 充 斑 」 之 稱 。

 選 購 腹 部 有 彈 性 ， 體 色 鮮 明 且 皮 膚 較 嫩 者 。 每 隻 魚 的 嘴 巴 均 會 打 開 只 是 大 小 不 同 ， 也 有 的 魚 眼 球 會 變 成 白 色 ， 而 中 心 清 澈 者 鮮 度 較 佳 。

 虎 理 石 狗 公 時 ， 由 於 牠 身 上 長 有 尖 銳 的 刺 且 有 很 多 魚 鱗 ， 所 以 要 特 別 注 意 小 心 。 石 狗 公 的 烹 煮 方 法 以 煮 湯 最 佳 ， 能 使 其 緊 實 的 肉 質 增 添 美 味 ， 將 肉 切 塊 連 同 洋 蔥 、 茼 蒿 菜 、 豆 腐 等 一 起 煮 火 鍋 ， 另 外 鹽 燒 也 很 不 錯 。

 若 是 較 小 的 魚 ， 則 只 取 出 內 臟 後 ， 整 尾 放 入 湯 中 熬 煮 ， 加 入 芥 菜 、 豆 腐 、 鹹 蛋 ， 不 但 味 道 鮮 美 ， 而 且 可 以 解 酒 及 宿 醉 。 新 鮮 度 夠 佳 的 話 則 做 成 生 魚 片 或 是 冰 縮 生 魚 片 ( 用 冷 水 或 冰 水 冰 縮 的 生 魚 片 ) 。

 石 狗 公 的 近 親 為 外 觀 與 其 非 常 相 似 的 鮶 屬 的 鮶 類 ， 而 其 料 理 方 法 與 石 狗 公 相 同 ， 其 種 類 有 青 鮶 、 條 紋 鮶 、 斑 鮶 等 ， 其 中 青 鮶 的 味 道 最 上 乘 ， 在 北 海 道 一 向 被 視 為 高 級 魚 類 。
